Is AI Automation Right for Your Business? A No-Hype Guide

2026-03-18 5 min read

AI is one of the most over-promised and under-explained technologies in business right now. Behind the noise, there are genuinely useful applications, and there are also plenty of businesses being sold solutions to problems they don't have.

The clearest use case is repetitive, rules-based work: sorting incoming enquiries, extracting data from documents, drafting first-pass responses to common questions. These tasks are time-consuming for people but well suited to automation.

A second strong use case is pattern detection in data you already collect, such as flagging unusual transactions or predicting which customers are at risk of churning.

Where AI is weaker is in judgement calls that depend on context you haven't documented anywhere, or in customer-facing situations where getting it wrong damages trust.

The right way to evaluate a potential AI project is to ask: how many hours a week does this task currently take, how repetitive is it, and what happens if the system gets it wrong occasionally? If the answer is 'a lot of hours, very repetitive, low-stakes mistakes', it's usually a good candidate.

Start small, measure the time actually saved, and expand from there. The businesses that get the most value from AI automation are the ones that treat it as a practical tool, not a strategy in itself.
