Cloud Migration: What UK SMEs Get Wrong
Moving to the cloud is one of the highest-leverage decisions a growing business can make — and one of the easiest to get wrong if it's treated as a simple lift-and-shift.
The first mistake is migrating everything at once. A phased migration, starting with the systems that benefit most from cloud elasticity, gives you room to catch problems before they affect the whole business.
The second mistake is ignoring cost visibility. Cloud billing is usage-based, and without proper monitoring and budgets in place, costs can quietly grow far beyond what an equivalent on-premise setup would have cost.
The third mistake is underestimating data transfer and compliance requirements — especially for UK businesses that need to know exactly where customer data is stored and processed.
The fourth mistake is skipping a proper backup and disaster recovery plan, on the assumption that the cloud provider handles everything. Providers guarantee infrastructure uptime, not protection against your own misconfiguration or accidental deletion.
The fifth mistake is migrating without re-architecting. Cloud platforms reward systems designed around managed services and horizontal scaling — simply moving an old server setup into a virtual machine captures very little of the cloud's actual benefit.
Done properly, a cloud migration reduces operating costs, improves uptime, and gives a growing business room to scale without a hardware refresh every few years. Done poorly, it just moves the same problems onto someone else's servers.
