A Practical Cloud Migration Checklist for UK SMEs

Cloud migration has a reputation for being risky, expensive and disruptive. In our experience, the projects that go wrong are almost always missing one of a handful of basic steps, not because cloud technology itself is unreliable.

Start with an inventory. Before moving anything, list every system, dataset and integration currently in use. It's common to discover forgotten services still quietly running and costing money.

Classify your data by sensitivity and compliance requirement. Not everything needs the same treatment, and knowing this early avoids expensive re-architecture later.

Choose the right migration pattern for each workload: some things can simply be 'lifted and shifted', others benefit from being redesigned to take advantage of cloud-native features.

Plan your cutover window carefully, and always keep a rollback path. A migration that can't be undone if something goes wrong is a migration with too much risk attached.

Set up monitoring and cost alerts from day one. Cloud bills can creep upward quietly; visibility from the start keeps this in check.

Finally, test everything under realistic load before declaring the migration complete. A system that works for five users in testing can behave very differently under real traffic.
