Web App or Mobile App? How to Choose for Your Next Project

2026-02-09 6 min read

One of the most common questions we get from founders and business owners is whether their next product should be a web app, a native mobile app, or both. The honest answer is: it depends on how your users will actually use it.

If your product is used primarily at a desk, during work hours, or needs to be accessed from many different devices, a web app is usually the better starting point. It's cheaper to build, easier to update, and works everywhere without an app store.

If your product depends on features like offline access, push notifications, camera integration or background location tracking, a native mobile app becomes much more compelling, sometimes essential.

Cost is a real factor too. A single web app is typically faster and cheaper to build than native apps for both iOS and Android. Cross-platform frameworks can narrow this gap but come with their own trade-offs.

Distribution matters as well. Web apps can be shared with a link instantly; mobile apps require app store approval and, for many users, a deliberate download decision.

Our usual recommendation for early-stage products is to launch as a web app to validate demand quickly, then build native apps once you have evidence that mobile-specific features will meaningfully improve the experience.
